The ending of the Rise of Skywalker was wrong
Wait. Excuse me. WHAT THE FUCK?
You read correctly, dear friends. Someone fucked with the editing of Rise of Skywalker and it changed the entire ending of the movie. It changed the characterization of three key characters and it's clear this was against the creator's wishes. I'll be breaking this down into a few key sections. What were the changes, Why I believe these changes were made (and made last minute), and do I consider this ending more or less canon then the theatrical ending. So. JOIN ME ON THIS ADVENTURE FRIEND
The plot changes/editing change
It's fairly simple. They changed Leia's role in the plot, this changed the entire direction of the last few minutes of the movie. Let me break the timeline down
โ Deathstar fight on the ocean still happens, Ben is distracted by Leia reaching out to him. She either still enters her "disappointment son" coma here, or perhaps simply just reaches out to him.
โ From here, the plot continues as normal. Ben and Rey both get to the sith rave separately.
โ Rey Dies
โ Ben Revives her and dies.
โ Leia chooses THIS MOMENT to die and give her life to her son
โ Ben is revived. He and Rey kiss.
โ Move to conclusion
WHAT EVIDENCE DO I HAVE THESE CHANGES WERE MADE (and at the last moment)
Take in note, my evidence is circumstantial, but circumstantial evidence still counts as proof
โ Leia's final role in the movie is insanely unclear. She also takes 12 hours to actually die or something. Again. Confusing
โ Ben's final words, as of this moment, are "OW". Adam Driver said he was nervous about his final dialogue in the movie to the point he stressed about it on the flight over. And. Man. IDK about you but OW seems a little unstressful to say
โ There was no Force Ghost Ben, a decision that is baffling story wise. It would take any competent VFX team hardly any effort to throw a ghostly adam driver next to Leia and Luke. And this would be advantageous to add to the plot if Ben was going to die, give that final bit of closure to the Skywalker fam.
โ Rey's near LACK of emotion over his death. Go watch her realize she has to leave Ben behind in TLJ and tell me that the difference isn't noticeable. It's completely against her character.
โ The weird beats of Leia going into her disappointment son coma and the other strange beats of Ben's death. Especially the fact that you only see him disappear in like. one shot.
โ None of the cast thought he was going to die
โ Wow I wonder why Adam Driver is adamant about never wanting to do star wars at this point?
โ Wow, why does disney keep resetting the character poll of who is the most anticipated character of this movie????
โ The prophecy about Ben's death is completely unnecessary at this point. If it was brought up during TFA, it's understandable to put that thread there. Instead it's in the last movie when his death seems to be a foregone conclusion???
โ So Rey's fine for Luke and Leia even tho she's palpatines kid, but Luke and Leia don't seem all that bothered by Ben's death??????
โ This was supposed to be Leia's film and complete her arc. And while I understand that there was a lack of footage to use for her, it's odd that she ended up not playing much of a role beyond "Distract Ben so he gets stabbed ig"
โ Every single hole in characterization for Luke, Leia, and Rey, every strange beat that didn't really make sense in Ben and Rey's fight on the ocean and during their ??? Mutual deaths???? and the some how rushed and dragged on ending can be solved by a simple solution. Occam's razor, Ben was never meant to die permanently.
โ The fact that there was no final dialogue for Ben after his talk with his father suggests he had something significant to say after his resurrection
โ The fact that they didn't have a cut of Rey absolutely LOSING HER MIND over losing to, what amounts to, the other half of her soul suggests that she was never supposed to lose him permanently
โ The fact that there is no Ben Ghost means that they didn't have the time to slip that in before pushing it out to theaters
โ The way the final scenes with Rey are shot and edited are, again, weird, off balance. It seems like it ends WAY TOO QUICKLY and far too on the nose.
โ no but really guys. His final words are "OW"
โ As for WHO changed it, because of the fact that this is clearly an edit job done at the last minute? I'm putting my money on a CEO that is above Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrhrams. I think their hands are tied ATM. This is the ending that had been planned for, this is the ending they wanted, otherwise there would not be such big holes that felt weird and dishonest to the characters. And, like, Kylo Ren/Ben Solo was JJ's child, he wouldn't have done him dirty like this.\
THEATRICAL ENDING/TRUE ENDING
I'm sure opinions would be divided on which ending is canon depending on the person. The theatrical ending will be what's considered canon in the universe of star wars at large. For myself, I find it hard to deny the creators and filmmakers the right to present the story they wanted to tell. So, in that way, both endings are true for me. Though, I am biased-- both as someone who is an artist myself and someone who adores Kylo Ren's/Ben Solo's character-- I like the story the film team were trying to tell over the agenda that whoever pushed for these changes had. Personally, I believe it pushes Star Wars as a universe forward into new territory rather than keep it stagnant in the same old same old that it's always been. Plus. this maintains the integrity of Luke, Leia, and Rey's characters, Ben was never forgotten, far too gone, or unloved. Leia gave him one final gift, a second chance.
That said, I'm not pushing this ending on anyone. I won't be playing it by default. I would rather ask permission or have someone else bring it up.

Rose nods, giving Rey a soft sad smile. 'Yeah, that's probably for the best right now.'
Honestly, Poe and Finn had to make this so karking complicated, but-- this wasn't even just about them. But the whole of the galaxy at this point. Most would not have charitable feelings about Kylo Ren and giving him a second chance under his old name. And-- Poe was the leader right now, it could very well compromise him to harbor the former Supreme Leader right under his nose.
In the meantime? Rose is going to have to beat down at their defenses until they decide to try and give him a chance. Rose isn't blinded by ego or pain, she realizes that Kylo Ren flipping to their side as Ben Solo is a lot more valuable than him being dead.
Hm.
Give her a second, her eyes sweep over Ben and then Rey..... and then back to Ben. Kinda unnerving, Ben shifts minutely under her gaze and glances over to Rey looking... confused.
'I'd like to talk with you privately before you leave,' That's directed at Rey, thoroughly. 'I'll let you go handle what you need to do.'
Rose is giving Rey no room to say 'No' to the girl talk. Kinda weird, kinda sus, wonder what that's about. Maybe it's about platonic relationships. Doesn't matter, she's scurrying off back to where the barracks are located. ]
She's very trusting. [ Unsure if that was awe or condescending. Maybe a bit of both. He's not used to people being... Nice. ]

[Rey agrees, more out of worry than anything. Rose isn't a bad person. She's highly intelligent, and Rey can see her being a good friend. She knows there's more to come in the convo with Rose, and puts it to the back of her mind for now.
They need to focus on respectfully getting his mother's things.
They stand in silence and watch Rose retreat back to the barracks. Once she's safely inside, Rey turns to him with her arms crossed over her chest. She probably should say something meaningful, but she's fresh out of words right now. So she gives a nod of her head and leads the way into the barracks, ignoring looks and whispers as they make their way to Leia's quarters.]

It's eerily quiet in the base as they make their way to his mother's room. He knows what barracks and bases normally sound like and this is so quiet it's absolutely unnerving. At the very least he knows it's about him, otherwise this would be a huge signal that this was a trap. So. Stay focused on the objective and not the looks they receive as they pass through.
Ah-- his eyes look over and he can see in a small sheltered area there's a spot with a white linen draped over it and... he shakes his head. There's no use in dwelling on it. Maz is over there giving him an unreadable look. More things for him to ignore.
Once they reach her room there's a quiet hush of air signaling their entrance and all at once he's hit with a familiar scent of the fragrance she preferred to wear, how her, admittedly, small vanity area had things organized just as she had when he was living with her, and clothes set out for a day she never saw.
Deep breath. He can do this. ]

[ Just needed a moment to gather himself before he broke down into tears. It's fine.
He moves forward and is able to sort through her things easily, it's never as if Leia had much excess-- but Ben knows exactly where to look as well. ]
We had a bond as well. [ His voice is soft as he finds a few of the rings he'd been looking for. Explaining these things gives him something to focus on for the moment. The shock would wear off, the grief would come, but for the moment it was easy to believe that maybe they were racing her. That she'd come waltzing through the door to yell at them both for causing such a ruckus. ] That's why she was able to give her life to me at such a distance.
[ And why he knew that she'd been the one to do this at the cost of her life as soon as Rey mentioned her.
He finds a necklace he'd been looking for... and Han's dice. Of course. Another small container to hold them all in and-- well. That's it. Perhaps there'd been more she left behind, but he had no use for most of it. And she left far more children behind other than himself. ]

[Rey softly responds, keeping her distance. She respectfully doesn't watch him and instead lingers in the corner, quietly removing one of Leia's cloaks from the wall hooks that held the few she owned. It's slipped on and in place by the time he finishes, and she answers his question with a nod of her head.
She's lost in her own thoughts, memories of Leia and their time together in this place filling her head. They keep her quiet on the short walk down to her own quarters, and the silence stretches on as they enter her small space.
With the door shut behind them, she quickly starts packing her things. She doesn't have much, her space bare apart from her staff and a few trinkets. Her minimal amount of clothes are packed and take little space in her bag. Some hair ties and pins finish off her packing, and she's left standing awkwardly by her bed.]
I need to speak to Rose before we go. You should wait here.
[She'd say to make herself comfortable, but...that's probably not happening. Especially since she can hear the telltale sign of BB-8 and D-O beeping outside her door.]

[ He is the very definition of trouble just by existing. But. He, at the very least, won't be leaving the room.
Rey will have to search for a bit to find Rose. She's not in her quarters... in fact Finn and Poe aren't even in their quarters. It may take a bit for Rey to figure out where they went until another rebel points in the direction of the Falcon and--
Ah. Rose has Poe and Finn helping clear out the supplies that the Resistance will still need in the upcoming weeks. Parts for repairs, comm units, blasters, some of the rations. While the Falcon is gonna carry Rey and Ben, it's not a supply running ship. At least for the moment. Poe and Finn are not looking Happy about this development, but it's fairly clear Rose has made them help.
Chewbacca is clambering all over the ship and dealing with the various repairs which need to be finished. And Lando... is flirting with Jannah??? Also it looks like he's gonna go sort through the spirits.
The rest of the Resistance seems to be keeping their distance because this is a bit of a paradigm shift for them. That gossip spread fast and boy. It looks like it's gonna be up to Poe Dameron to tell everyone they are not allowed to speak about what happened here outside of this base, because the galaxy is definitely not prepared to hear that Kylo Ren survived this war.
Once Rose spots Rey she'll smile wide. A bit more genuine than before, she gestures for her to get her butt over to the Falcon.
'It won't take long, I promise,' Rose says this as she herds Rey into the now cleared crew's quarters in the falcon and REY SHOULD BE SCARED. ]

Rose really means that too. She'd been a bit resentful of Rey, at first. At all the attention she seemed to grab away and how much Finn could never shut up about her. It only got worse with Poe involved. They both put Rey on this pedestal above everyone else and... it was aggravating, honestly. Like. She got it, but it still didn't feel good to be "second best" in the group. But as she saw the three of them interact and grow, as she watched Rey focus more and more on her own studies and missions... she realized that Rey didn't particularly enjoy that pedestal and-- she was just very real and very human. Flaws, failings, and all.
So, no plan? Whatever. As if Poe could claim he had any better planning.
'But this is important,' Just not galaxy saving important.
Rose is gonna guide Rey to sit in a bunk next to her as---
She begins the Talk. Trying to be as delicate as possible about things and prefaces that she is not here to judge. She does look a little surprised when Rey says they've only kissed. Like... okay the timing wouldn't make sense for Ben and Rey to have fucked yet. So. HEY, baseline stuff. Like, HEY you should pee everytime after y'all put the thing in the thing. And you know if you get some bullshit going on down there go get yourself some probiotics. Those are important. And just as Rose reaches into a pouch at her side and pulls out a few vials.
'These should protect you for a cycle,' She'll press them to Rey's palm as she explains any and all side effects and yada yada.
She's getting ready to wind down the entire conversation as she mentions lube in a off-hand sort of way. Saying that generally it's best use is for if you're about to just go at it quickly or... you know. If ur takin' it up the ass (don't think about it too hard Rey)--
And then she remembers.
She's gonna try and say this as delicately as possible.
'Do you know how.... big he is?'

Okay, rather, he recognizes her vaguely from when he and Rey were working out some issues on the ocean, but even dipping into Rey's mind reveals this this girl is New.
There's a loud clap on his back as Lando passes, 'Good to see you not lookin' like shit, Mr. Ben.'
Oh my god, Kill him. He's really thinking this can't get much worse until Finn and Poe pass by and it's just a recreation of this scene.

Especially as he boards the ship and Chewbacca is sorting out sleeping arrangements and it's... It's just not gonna be great or private any time soon. Crew's quarters, captain's quarters, and sleepover in the main hold pretty much. They'll have to discuss it on the fly. And then Chewbacca has to just Screech at ben about not using up all the hot water on his first shower. Which just pisses Ben off because that...

R2 and D-O go with her to finish any necessary repairs, as she leaves Ben to either help Lando or Chewie. She watches BB-8 roll out of the ship to find Poe and feels the need to keep her hands busy so she doesn't feel sad. Thankfully, C-3PO in all his complaining glory makes his way on board and lets everyone know that Master Poe thought it would be best if he came on board to be with his family.
Great. That's...fine. Really. Rey never gets sick of hearing him bitch.
By the time they're basically ready to take off, Rey's heading through the ship with D-O at her heels. He rolls ahead when Ben's spotted, and bumps right into him a couple of times before rolling off to the side and back over to her. Rey laughs as she approaches. Droids are so precious.]
We won't be needed for a while. I think we might be able to slip away.

Chewbacca points at some stuff stacked in a corner and mentions it's for him. It's not a very big stack at this point. It's like. A comm unit, a blaster, some basic hygiene supplies. I hid from Unkar Plutt all the time when I was younger. I always thought he'd try to find me.
[Spoiler: he never did, and she would spend hours hiding in ship wreckage and ruins because she was eight and still would try playing games. She grew out of that, thankfully.

I'm not sure. [ He'll answer that truthfully. His mother was still running from her father's legacy, Luke was off traipsing around the galaxy for fun facts about Jedi, and Han was trying to pretend he could be a reliable husband and father.
Palpatine's kid dropping Rey off at their doorstep... That coulda have gone several different ways, really. His mother had already been so conflicted over her own son... how quickly would they have pieced together Rey's lineage? Would they have decided that meant her fate was set in the stars already?
And if he closes his eyes to think, had he felt something shift when he was ten? The memories are so vague and distant. Rose colored nostalgia that threatens to drown him some days. ]
