I know everyone and their mom with an armchair psychologist degree wants to diagnose Kylo Ren/Ben Solo with whatever mental illness checks all the boxes. I know Bipolar and Borderline personality disorder are two popular illnesses to cite when it comes to his mental health. Along with a healthy dose of citing him as a sociopath/psychopath. However, I'm not going to be using those illnesses/personality disorders in how I play Kylo. While they fit on paper, I don't believe "what's wrong with him" presents in the correct fashion in canon for any one of the above listed issues.

I believe Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is suffering from: Recurring Chronic Major Depression it could be passed down through their family given what we know of Anakin and what happened with Luke; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder From his force powers manifesting with him having little control over it as a kid, from being sent away to Luke after his mother couldn't handle him on her own anymore, from his father leaving one day and never coming back, from having a voice whispering in his head his entire life, from that voice being a predator who preyed on his weaknesses and molded him into what he wanted Ben to be, from Luke Skywalker holding a lightsaber above his head, from abuse after abuse from Snoke, and probably a Ton more. Abandonment issues stemming first from his parents (And quite probably friends he had who left for whatever reason, or bridges he burned on his own) and then just. The entire force tbh. And abandonment issues is where he gets his unchecked rage, he, in canon, is quite literally triggered into a rage whenever he confronts someone who he felt abandoned him, or when he feels rejected or left behind. Finally he is a victim of Brainwashing and indoctrination from Snoke. Snoke is a narcissist who was using Kylo as a means to an end, it's been stated and shown that he was ready to kill Kylo after the Last Jedi since he had become unbalanced and unpredictable. If you don't agree with what I am saying here (Which is fine :) ), then I suggest you don't play with me. I am fairly confident in this being the way I see and play Kylo.

I play him as having triggers. I won't get into the reasoning behind each one, but i'll specify the specifics which come to mind: Abandonment (Perceived or real), his family, loss of control (Physically, emotionally, mentally, through the force)

That won't help him to say, though. So she focuses on the larger truth. ]

[ It's hard to get a read on whether or not he considers that a bad thing. Rey can't quite sense whether Ben is criticizing her possessiveness, pointing out that it's strange and unusual for her to be this attached. It's probably true, to be fair. This is probably too much. But she lingers close to him, scanning his face, drawn to him all the same. ]

Ben's a deer in headlights, wondering exactly what would be the appropriate reaction to Chewie and Han walking in on this-- as well as dealing with the bevy of emotions that comes with her leaning in like that and realizing. He really really wants that and her. And not even sexually but spiritually and-- ]

Ben slipped past her and out of the awkward moment, leaving her alone with Chewie and his father to stare down. He'd had a good excuse, a way out of this, but she — She can see in their expressions that they're working on how to address this.

Because it needs addressing.

Chewie gives Han a slap on the shoulder and warbles a sound that means this is his problem to deal with. Han slides into the bench beside Rey and points a threatening finger at Chewie to say, 'Don't you go to sleep just because I'm the one doing this. If I go in there and you're snoring —'

Chewie cuts him off with a wookiee yell of indignation and then dismisses him to move to the bunks. Han stares after for a while. ]

Doing what, exactly?

[ Han looks back at Rey, briefly confused. ]

You said you're the one 'doing this.' Have I … [ She chews the inside of her lip for a moment before blurting it out. ] Did I do something wrong?

[ 'Look, kid. You're young.' ]

I'm fourteen.

[ 'Exactly. The rest of us on this ship, we've had our time. Grown up a little bit more.' ]

I'm plenty grown.

[ 'Not like this.' He drops the avoidance. 'You feel what you feel. Can't help that. But if you get carried away with it, that's how people make mistakes.' ]

Are you calling Ben a mistake?

[ 'Don't put words in my mouth.' He points at her, now. But he lowers the finger after a moment and sighs. 'I know a thing or two, believe it or not. Been where you are. Give it some time, some breathing room. See if you're still the people you think you are once you're done with your training.' ]

[ 'Because otherwise, you might get hurt.' He nods his head. 'Why don't you take my bunk tonight?' ]

You just don't want to listen to Chewie's snoring.

[ 'Yeah. Yeah, kid, you're right. I don't wanna listen to Chewie's snoring. Humor me.'

Rey hems and haws and gazes down the hallway after where Ben has gone to the refresher. She wants to be out here with him, but she gets the feeling that 'no' isn't really a valid answer here. Finally, she sighs and nods. ]

[ Yeah Ben is just. Scrubbing at his hair now. Trying to decide where and when he fucked up. Like, he's been around plenty of girls before. And boys!!! Plenty of objectively attractive people who he could recognize were attractive.

This makes no sense. This definitely makes no sense because when he thinks back to that moment all he can see and feel is Rey and there's no reason for him to be attracted to her. Maybe he really is broken.

He spends at least 5 minutes of the shower just scrubbing at his skin and trying to just-- exfoliate those feelings away. At least he's gonna have nice baby soft skin from sloughing off all the dead skin cells. And the rest is dedicated to getting his hair into order.

Putting on his clothes has never felt more like a death sentence. He's preparing himself for the lecture, the long lecture on how he's just confused and mistaken and maybe he should just go back to living with his mother because now he's definitely a predator and what he felt-- feels??? is proof enough that he's a monster and--

Shower is finished. The water stops and he tries not to listen for any voices (Is Chewie snoring already??). Clothes are slipped back on and he enters

[ Rey looks at him. Searches him. That flat response, the impassive way he presents himself. It … stings? In a way, it proves Han right. There are things she isn't considering, given that they've known each other for two days. Things that haven't been revealed to her yet.

For instance, in this moment, she considers the very strong possibility that Ben feels nothing for her at all. Every time, she has been the one to frame her desire to be around him. She wants him to teach her. She wants to have him all to herself. But Ben? What does he want? Does he even know?

Or maybe he does, and he has avoided saying it. Avoided hurting her? Or allowed her to act like a fool because he got something else out of it.

No. That's the dark thing. She recognizes it now, wants to flee it, but she has always used Ben to chase it out and now she won't have him. Tonight she won't have him. If she's scared, if the nightmares come, if they slip into something together that they can't escape —

Panic clambers up in her throat. She wants to cry. Instead, she gets to her feet. ]

I'll let you two sleep.

[ She avoids brushing Ben when she steps past him to head down the hall towards the bunks where Chewbacca is. ]

[ He recognizes it instantly and his instinct is to reach out to her, he even turns to watch her leave and it's as natural as anything and--

He swallows down the anxiety building in his throat, the pressure in his chest and tries to assure himself that she'd be fine with out him there.

[ In contrast to what Rey thinks is harsh from Ben-- That sentence rolls off of his tongue like ice. He's frustrated and a mess. Angry with himself and even with his father. His father who flew out of his life on a goddamn whim and is now here and dictating every aspect of it--

'Good. I don't either.'

Ben shifts his gaze to his father, sitting there and looking-- tired. And maybe a little amused.

'I just wanted to say, I get it.'

Ugh-- cool. Thanks dad. Glad to know you had confusing thoughts over children that are ruining your idea of who you are as a person. That's not some weird as hell TMI.

'Don't give me that look-- I do,' Han scruffs a hand through his hair, still not sure how to navigate this. He'd never been great at the 'Dad'ing thing. 'Just don't rush into the first thing that feels right, okay?'

A short pause and Ben grunts in some approximation to understanding before making his way over the bench and into the bunk Rey used last night. Cool. This won't make him feel weird at all. ]

I'm going to sleep.

[ He's twenty five fucking years old he is so Over being lectured right now. His dad can snore his loud ass self to sleep on the couch. ]

[ Rey is somber when she enters the crew's quarters. Chewie sits up on his bunk, looking at her, and trills sympathetically. She offers him a chagrined smile and sits on her own bunk. ]

I'm fine.

[ He tilts his head in consideration and she lets out a little sigh, curling up on Han's bunk. It, like the other, is too comfortable. Distractingly comfortable. Chewie doesn't want to accept her silence. ]

Alright, I'm not. But I will be. So leave it alone.

[ She pulls Han's pillow against her chest instead of putting it under her head. That helps a little to make it feel more like her home in the AT-AT.

Sleep doesn't come easily, especially not once Chewie is down. But it's not his sounds that preoccupy her. It's that they aren't Ben's sounds. ]

[ Cool. They are both on the train of "fuck off everyone i don't want to sleep". But it's animal instinct for Ben to fall asleep before his father. You don't fall asleep, you get to listen to chain saws. His sleep won't be especially restful, he's aggravated by errant thoughts and Hans possible sleep apnea, but he won't suffer from nightmares or especially dark thoughts.

A sorta neutral sleeping zone. Could be better, could be worse.

And he'll sleep like that until morning. EG: Hey Tifa, u get to decide how u want this night to go. ]

[ In Rey's dreams, her parents have a ship of their own. A nice one. A corvette. It's not big, but it's a little like the Falcon, and she runs around their ankles helping them around it. They warn her that time is almost up. Over, and over, and over again.

And then they leave her.

The cycle repeats. Each time, their home is somewhere different. Each time, she is a little older, their abandonment a little clearer.

When she is old enough to know better, to recognize the slaver's chains on her wrists and her neck as they walk her down the plank to Unkar Plutt, she dreams that Ben saves her. That he cuts Plutt down and her parents have their money and apologize to her, and Ben takes her in his arms and lays her on the gangplank of their ship and —

She tosses and turns through the night, and when morning comes, she is the first awake, uncomfortable in her clothes and unsatisfied and disappointed by her reality. When he awakens, Chewie offers her a canteen, and she takes it, rubbing her eyes. ]

Time to go?

[ He nods and makes a warbling sound. ]

Yeah. Yeah, I'll be fine on my own. Go.

[ And Chewie does, stepping out into the hall to circle around and rouse Han so they can take off. ]

[ He's awoken by Han-- A nudge the shoulder and he's rolling out of the bunk to get into his routine. He brushes his teeth and grabs a ration as he makes final adjustments to the Falcon as Chewie primes the engine.

It's utterly normal and because of that it's also surreal.

He wants to seek out Rey, his eyes wander to look for her a few times, but he tries to keep on task. Especially when he notices the prying eyes of his father. Yeah. Cool dad. Guess what? You thought you prevented pandora's box from opening but it's busted wide open and now this shit is like circling a goddamn black hole. Their mouths are gonna meet soon it is just a count down until when.

Good luck making sure they don't get into the same room together alone.

Which is of course exactly what Han plans on trying to prevent.

Ben's pulling himself out of the maitenance hatch when Chewie passes over him. Probably grabbing some extra supplies and rations for either Han or Rey.

'You done with those adjustments?'

The sound of his father's voice from the cock pit. ]

[ 'Okay, hope everyone's ready to get the hell outta Jakku. We're out in five!'

[ Rey lets Chewie leave without her, lets the door to the bunk slide shut again. She's not ready to go out there, and she's sure they don't need her. Every damn person on this ship is a pilot. She'll only clutter the halls. It leaves her mired in the negative emotions circling overhead still from last night. Like she's spare parts, again. Like the way Ben seemed to feel for her had been entirely a construction of her own desperate and lonely mind.

Of course it was. He was older. He was Han Solo's son and Luke Skywalker's nephew and a Jedi and a million other wonderful things and she was stupid to consider herself exceptional enough to warrant some special connection with him. She buries her head under a pillow. He probably already has someone.

But she can't stop thinking of her dream. Unconscious, she had allowed herself the freedom to imagine. His lips. His tongue. His skin. The chafing discomfort hasn't gone away. Maybe she should shower. She didn't have any other clothes, couldn't wash these, but maybe that would help. Maybe.

Except she already knows it's not the clothes that are the problem at all, even if taking them off might be a good step towards solving it. She kicks her heels against the bunk. Sand comes away, little grains that cover Han's mattress. She feels guilty, guilty enough to sit up and remove her boots and the rest of her sandy clothes and try to get the granules off the bed by whipping the sheets a little.

It's mostly an exercise in futility. They'll need to be washed. But there she is, naked and doing it anyway.

A horrible thought occurs to her — that maybe he'd wanted to be close to her, indeed, until he'd seen her in that bath. For that thought, her underwear and breast band are removed as well, as though it was their fault for being worn and embarrassing. She lays back out on the bed. It's not as sandy. A definite improvement.

Despite her conflicting feelings, the disappointment and rejection she feels, she still wants him. And for a moment, she lets herself lie there and imagine that he might come in to find her there, wondering what she's up to, and find her like this. Damn the warnings and prying ears of his father, he could take her into his arms and —

She realizes now that here and even in her dream, she doesn't know well enough what comes next to imagine anything rather more specific. Except that it feels warm and satisfying. Frustrated, she opens her eyes again and stares at the ceiling.

The engines rumble. Han must be getting ready to lift off. The whole ship shakes with it, and it makes her squeeze her thighs together. Rey glances at the door, listens for a moment, then runs her fingers down her abdomen to the thatch of wiry curls, matted with sweat, to seek out the damp source of her frustration. ]
