Kylo/Hux: This is such a huge maybe it's almost a no. I am not down for fluffy Kylo/Hux. I don't think Kylo or Hux secretly love each other and that takes form in them wanting to murder each other when they walk into a room and see each other. I only see this happening as Hux taking advantage of Kylo when he's emotionally compromised and unprotected without Snoke keeping Hux in line.

I know everyone and their mom with an armchair psychologist degree wants to diagnose Kylo Ren/Ben Solo with whatever mental illness checks all the boxes. I know Bipolar and Borderline personality disorder are two popular illnesses to cite when it comes to his mental health. Along with a healthy dose of citing him as a sociopath/psychopath. However, I'm not going to be using those illnesses/personality disorders in how I play Kylo. While they fit on paper, I don't believe "what's wrong with him" presents in the correct fashion in canon for any one of the above listed issues.

I believe Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is suffering from: Recurring Chronic Major Depression it could be passed down through their family given what we know of Anakin and what happened with Luke; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder From his force powers manifesting with him having little control over it as a kid, from being sent away to Luke after his mother couldn't handle him on her own anymore, from his father leaving one day and never coming back, from having a voice whispering in his head his entire life, from that voice being a predator who preyed on his weaknesses and molded him into what he wanted Ben to be, from Luke Skywalker holding a lightsaber above his head, from abuse after abuse from Snoke, and probably a Ton more. Abandonment issues stemming first from his parents (And quite probably friends he had who left for whatever reason, or bridges he burned on his own) and then just. The entire force tbh. And abandonment issues is where he gets his unchecked rage, he, in canon, is quite literally triggered into a rage whenever he confronts someone who he felt abandoned him, or when he feels rejected or left behind. Finally he is a victim of Brainwashing and indoctrination from Snoke. Snoke is a narcissist who was using Kylo as a means to an end, it's been stated and shown that he was ready to kill Kylo after the Last Jedi since he had become unbalanced and unpredictable. If you don't agree with what I am saying here (Which is fine :) ), then I suggest you don't play with me. I am fairly confident in this being the way I see and play Kylo.

I play him as having triggers. I won't get into the reasoning behind each one, but i'll specify the specifics which come to mind: Abandonment (Perceived or real), his family, loss of control (Physically, emotionally, mentally, through the force)

[ She bristles when he settles the blanket over her, as though she expects an attack, and she turns slightly to look at him, catching his eye just as he turns away. No. Not an attack. Just … He cares. For whatever reason, he gives a shit, and Rey can hardly grasp that. No one on Jakku gives a shit about anybody — barely even themselves. They're all so dead inside; they've given up.

She looks away from him again. His calm radiates outward, so though she doesn't consciously tap into it, she can feel tension leaving her body as he just … rubs off on her. Non-sexually.

It's the best night of sleep she's ever gotten. No nightmares of her parents, no tossing and turning, no restless anxiety as she waits for someone to come at her with a knife. She feels safe here, on the Falcon. It's the only time in her life she remembers feeling safe.

In the morning, she picks herself up with practiced speed. There's not much for her to collect. She pulls her hair back again, secures it back into its usual style, and pulls her boots back on. She folds the blanket up. She's awake before everyone else on the ship, and quiet in what she does. She's never really had any ambient sound, so she's sensitive to her own rustling. ]

[ He'd only fallen asleep an hour or so earlier sitting upright at the table with his arms crossed, head tilted to the side a bit and-- seems fairly dead to the world until Rey has to step over him. It jostles him enough that he jolts upright and thank god this isn't an anime or he'd probably accidentally grab her or some shit like that. But No. This is just "Hi the Force has decided we are married and you being awake and aware means I am more likely to wake up when you are near me"-- ]

'Morning.

[ He looks terrible. Probably because he's a dick who stayed up most of the night meditating on Jedi.

But he's like. Not making any moves to stop her. Again. She seems Jumpy.

Just throw the blanket over his head and command him to go back to sleep. It'd probably work, he's your slave already and he doesn't know it yet. ]

[ Jumpy indeed. She flinches a little when he speaks, surprised by the fact that he's awake, albeit not very alert. Mostly she's just not used to other people being around in general. It wasn't that she had forgotten his presence, exactly, but rather that she had side-stepped it. Now he's a living, breathing person again and she's not used to being in other people's company. Still. Ever.

When her pulse has calmed a little, she finds it in her to speak. ]

I'm heading down to the wreck. I should be back with the parts later in the day.

[ Obviously, she isn't expecting the Brady Bunch to assist her. It's … not unreasonable tbh. She's the expert here. ]

[ That's honest and blunt, not meant to be a refusal of the help, but a straight answer as to whether or not she needs it. It's not trying to dismiss his kindness. It just … doesn't know what to do with it. She'd done this literally yesterday at another freighter. That she knew where this one was only meant she could do it again.

But she realizes that he's … trying to be a kind and decent human being and help out even though she doesn't need it. Some part of her, looking him over, feels like he's only going to slow her down and get in the way.

Yet when she goes to follow-up, she says— ] You can come along if you want.

[ -----?!?!?!?

He's not awake enough to actually think this through properly. He actually thought she'd flat out refuse him because-- again. She's ~edgy~.

Actually, what the hell would his father and Chewbacca think if he just suddenly disappeared with Rey. Like, it'd be obvious what they were doing?? But given the fact that he seems to be on trial AND convicted for molesting a child he just met he knows how this is going to end up.

And she still hasn't agreed to come along with him.

So like. I'm glad we are all in agreement. He should politely say no and put an end to this nonsens-- ]

[ He says through a yawn, covering his mouth with a gloved hand.

To the distant sound of Naima throwing her keyboard out the window. ]

Rey doesn't even know how to engage that question. Why is he even asking? Either he wants to come or he doesn't, and she'd invited him. Does he not want to unless she wants him to? That's stupid, she decides quickly.

She's not your typical teenager, as you might be realizing.

It feels like he's playing mind games with her and she DOES NOT appreciate that one bit. She grapples with it, looking vaguely panicked about what kind of answer he's looking for. ]

It doesn't make a difference to me.

[ Which is the truth ? ? ? Force knows if it's the right answer or not. She turns on her heel then and heads for the cargo ramp because fuck that entire interaction. Just. Fuck it. ]

This further proves his Edgy assessment. Like yeah wow he still had issues but at least he had passed That stage of his life. Wooo what a trip that was. I am honestly surprised no one sent him away to Pray Away The Force camp earlier tbh.

Anywho. He's gonna make a quick judgement call here. Weighing several different key factor. He stays here he gets to Not Relax with Chewbacca and Han Solo. They're probably going to be working on the ship all day and bitching about all the adjustments Unkar Plutt did. At best, he can hope to stay in his corner and dodge most of the complaining until he's dragged into it to figure out what the fuck was his deal with the girl. The transmissions aren't even working, he's not even sure if he could get a good connection to the holonet from here.

So wow. Not ideal.

Then there's Rey.

She's grumpy and frustrated with him. And will probably decidedly Not Want his help. She's been doing this her entire life after all. BUT-- he doesn't have to deal with the interrogation immediately and she will, presumably, not mob him with dumb questions about his supposed desire to molest her. He also may get enough space to try and do some like. Jedi meditation or some shit.

Also the Mun is sitting here like "GET HIM TO SWEAT A TON SO WE CAN GET HIM INTO A REFRESHER AND SHIRTLESS"

So I get final call.

This is a terrible choice to be made but he's making it.

She's already walking down the ramp by the time he pokes his head through the crew quarters to say he's making sure no one fucks with Rey (Which is a semi-legit excuse now that Unkar Plutt's face was broken by her) and grabbing a few rations and

Hey Rey.

Don't worry, he's not one for making idle chit chat, he'll just come astride in a few large steps and: ]

[ Why is snoke trying to shape these two into his apprentices they are the worst. ]

[ She looks up at him, gives him a wary nod, and then proceeds down the ramp into the sand. One hand reaches up to pull her scarf around her face again in a makeshift mask. Thick, wound muslin protects her from the sun, and the goggles keep sand out of her eyes. The look she casts his way is, as a result, inscrutable. But intuition can probably relay that she's judging him for being underdressed for Jakku.

Then she starts off to the half-sunk freighter in the valley below, staff strapped across her chest. As she slides down the dune, her boots kick up sand like waves in an ocean. She jogs to catch herself at the bottom, and climbs up on top of the freighter.

No one has cracked this one yet. She'd found it two weeks ago and been scoping it for parts for the Falcon, but ultimately decided it was too far away when she'd found the other closer and still sufficiently intact. She bangs on the empty hull with her staff once, twice, and then knocks out a panel. Closing her fist around a fistful of wiring, she rips it free. Hoses and clamps and wires alike litter the ground at Ben's feet while he approaches, and she continues her work as though she means to drill straight through the hull.

On closer inspection, it's easy to see why: the ramp is buried along with two thirds of the rest of the ship. ]

[ I mean. I'm just gonna go ahead and say Ben has slathered on some Super Star Wars Sun Screen because otherwise his ass would burn Hard. It's got Nanobites and shit in it.

But otherwise, yeah. He is woefully under-dressed. Which he realizes and like. Maybe he should have gone off to get a nathan drake outfit, but whatever. He's not going to be doing the climbing, he's Elena Fischer today. Rey gets to make the quips and get the artifacts.

And Wow. Sand is Everywhere. So is sweat. He's gonna be finding sand in places for Days. This is just not the Best decision, but he was stuck with no Best decisions today. What ever. It's fine.

He catches up to her and dodges that clump of wiring, dumping sand out of a shoe thats just gonna get filled with sand again and-- honestly. He's not about to go up there and Mansplain to her how to do her job. But you know. While she looks like she is cool with ripping through a hull with her staff and practically bare fists-- ]

Rey-- [ Once she looks up at him, she'll notice a slight movement at his hip as he just throws something to her--

His lightsaber. Of course.

Just trusting young hormonal teenagers with your phallus metaphor, huh ben? ]

[ There's something surprisingly streamlined about the way she catches in the same moment she looks, as though she had felt his intent and the item in him well before it had ever made its way to her. She looks surprised by it, at least, looking at the hilt in her hand and — oh. Duh. Lightsaber.

She looks back down at him, wide-eyed behind her goggles but, of course, unreadable to him now. She holds out her staff and lets it thud down in the sand, dropped off the side of the ship. Then she holds the lightsaber up and sort of … leans away from it as she presses the button to ignite it.

Snap-hiss. It purrs to life, humming in her hand. And it feels right, somehow. Steals her breath. She examines the hilt and blade in her hand for a minute, scoping it out, then braces the hilt with both hands and turns it upside down, slowly driving it down into the paneling in front of her.

Plasma cleaves clear through the metal, melting it into something molten and lava-like. It drips down away from her and she wedges it to the side, cutting open a circular hatch for them to drop through before she shuts it off and, inside the hull, pulls down her scarf-mask to whiff the smell of burnt steel and ozone.

Weird.

She pulls the nose cover back up and climbs back out of the hull, throwing the hilt back down to him. ]

We've got a path through. Follow me.

[ And then she's gone again like a prairie dog. She drops down through the hole — which will be barely wide enough for his shoulders because he's huge and she hasn't got a good measure of him yet — and her boots thud on the side wall of the freighter because it's tipped that way from when it crashed. Go figure. She starts the trek down the hall towards engineering. ]

[ Once she's got a hang of it-- there's a grin that touches his mouth. One could say it looks like Han's, but do not tell him that. He will never grin again out of spite. But she looks good cutting through the hull of a ship with a lightsaber.

And Ben Solo has not realized how his thoughts may be going in a problematic direction That Every One Else Sees Coming. (Okay to be fair tho, making jokes about it is Not Helping Dad)

He catches his saber and hooks it back on to his belt, making his move to follow her and-- Jesus Rey. Ben Solos are larger than they appear in your mirror okay? It takes a moment to crouch down and make sure the edges aren't still molten hot before he just slides in.

And you know. This is probably the moment some dumbass screen writer or Asshole character would have Ben comment "Wow, so you do this often?"

But thank god for characters who hate small talk.

He just quietly follows her, kinda taking the entire thing in. He'd been around a decent number of ships his entire life, but never like this. It was honestly interesting to see her work. Like. Interesting, but also horrifying in a Child Slavery is TERRIBLE sort of way. ]

[ The engineering bay is cramped much like the one on the Falcon. There's room for them both, but they're breathing each other's stale air, and the already oven-baked space — made tolerable only by the sand covering it has had to keep the sun's rays from beating directly on this part of the ship — grows even hotter with the body heat they're putting off.

Rey doesn't waste time. She pries open the hyperdrive and gets her hands in its guts, crouching down, stuffing her whole arm up to the shoulder. Anyone who knows their way around a ship knows that no one should ever, Ever, put their whole arm into a hyperdrive. Especially one they aren't familiar with when they don't know who's in the cockpit. It's a stupid and risky.

Speaking of Child Slavery is Terrible. Rey doesn't look concerned, like maybe she's used to taking these sorts of risks in her life. ]

[ Cool. Keep your cool, Ben Solo. Like-- he's coaching himself from being worried because despite the fact that Han Solo has definitely had his son doing some non OSHA compliant shit on the Falcon both at this height and when he was actually Smol, he's never had him do anything like THIS. Actually did scream his head off about something like this once.

Probably told him something along the lines of "you wanna be like one of those scavenger kids from Jakku who lose an arm doin' that sorta thing???"

But Again. She knows what she's doing and he's not gonna mansplain to her because he is Very Sure she knows.

He hopes she does.

He presses his lips together wondering if he should wave it away because it seems.... Kinda weird??? Also how the hell is this going to work, it's not like he has a working comm on him or something.

Well... He'll just back out slowly to try and figure this shit out- ] Rey, I'll be right outside the bay. Got something I need to deal with.

[ Mysterious Jedi Business.

-- He doesn't realize he's about to get a full frontal Force Time assault for the first time and it's not gonna be Rey. ]

[ This she says not in reverence, but with every patronizing quality it could possibly possess. She doesn't even look back at him. She assumes he's too squeamish to deal with the guts of a ship and something looking unsafe.

And anyway, she doesn't mind. It's going to take her some considerable time to get all the pieces she needs removed from this hyperdrive so she can get a the part she needs for the Falcon. There's a reason scavenging takes all day. ]

[ Pfft- Teenagers. He's just gonna get used to Ms Sass, because this is the life he's choosing. BUt for now, finding a relatively stable place in the wreck to sort of-- try and pull at that string in his head? Honestly it's weird. He and Luke never really used the Force to communicate like this and--

'Lookin' for me, Mr. Ben?'

It was as if he blinked and Luke was there. No sock-slipping through hallways this time, or inquiring about surroundings. He's squinting because there's no way his Uncle is actually--

'It's a Force projection, kid. Not somethin' I taught you... Yet.'

[ Luke sighs, seemingly perturbed, but not with Ben-- himself it appears. At least if the placating hand he holds up is any measure.

Which-- THis would be all well and good if this was the point in the AU where the Skywalkers Finally Talked Out Their Issues. But we aren't there yet. Not quite. Whoops. Especially because Luke sort of looks over Ben's shoulder. As if he could see R--

'You gonna keep pretending you can't hear me, kid? Just wanna be on the same page.'

MORE CONFUSION FROM BEN. TONS OF IT. Like looking over to Rey in Alarm MAYBE HIS UNCLE REALLY IS HERE.

At the very least, Luke Skywalker isn't actually trying to harass Rey of Jakku in leaving her work right now. But he has started to suss out this situation. No smut hut involved yet. ]

[ Is he talking? Rey's banging around in the hyperdrive, so for a moment, she thinks he's saying something to her. She decides resolutely to ignore it. She'd told him she could handle this. But then she's able to sit back and start pulling a casing off of the hyperdrive and she feels Ben's anxiety.

So she turns to look at him and arches her eyebrows. ]

What were you saying? [ Wow. He looks really spooked. Rey furrows her brow. She doesn't know what to do with this.

Beyond him, and beyond her view, Luke is looking a little satisfied with himself.

'She can't see me.' ]

[ Asshole. That thought should ring across the bond loudly. And while Luke can't hear it, it's clearly written on Ben's face.

'After you started growing hair on your face you've never been any fun.'

Ben's just going to sigh and roll his eyes dramatically. ]

I'm getting a message from-- someone, it's nothing to worry about.

[ Honestly, she seemed kinda hype about Luke Skywalker and if she's not going to come along-- better to not ruin her image of this larger than life hero tbh.

[ Rey looks him over. He doesn't even have a datapad out, let alone any other kind of comm device. The suspicion is written all across her face, but … he doesn't seem to be lying. She gestures with the tool she pulls from the pouch on her belt into the hallway. ]

Well, could you take it out there? I'm trying to concentrate.

[ Luke takes this opportunity to point out, 'Just like Han. You open your mouth and you've already got a woman mad about something.' ]

[ Screaming internally to be honest. Well At least Luke isn't making jokes about him being intimate with a child.

He'll just silently move his huge Wampa ass out further-- Luke patiently following him-- Well not before cracking out a loud:

'You got him trained this quick, you're following in the footsteps of my sister.'

Ah. Good. There's the implication of him wanting to be intimate with a child. He hates his family. So much. Maybe he should systematically murder them. One by one. In a trilogy. That would be neat.

He exits out into a slight opening away from Rey and her OSHA breaking habits and just exhales a huff and looks back to him. Almost expectantly.

'Don't give me that look, you're the one who called me, remember?'

...Right. Cool. How does he even start this conversation. ]

Something strange happened.

[ 'Have anything to do with that girl?'

Ben looks up, alarmed at first, like. Worried that his father somehow got to Luke first-- but no. That's impossible.

'Stop panicking, the fact that she could hear me is proof enough somethings goin' on.'

Ben's... still awkward, trying to figure out how to be in front of his Uncle right now. But fortunately Luke knows well enough to not push that right now. His nephew didn't come to him for stilted apologies or vague explanations. He was the type to ruminate on a situation and if it was out of his hands he'd seek council. ]

I bumped into her and-- it's like we're in each other's minds. It doesn't make sense. We keep seeing visions when we touch.

[ Luke crosses his arms a bit impatiently and huffs-

'Yeah? Then stop touching her.'

Did he really need to explain Forcebonds to this kid? He already had a full lecture on them and-- ]

She has the same darkness.

[ That causes Luke to hesitate. He looks to where his students are working through some of the training he's given them-- a look of concern crossing his features before he looks back to Ben.

'Tell me everything.' ]

[ Rey rotates the hyperdrive. It's a whirring thing that churns and wheezes as it sloughs off decades of sand and dead insects that had crawled its way into this beautiful ship's guts. She does it gingerly, as though loving this old machine she'd just met today. And she keeps it spinning, trying to loosen all the guts up manually while it's going at a reasonable speed and not, well, hyperspeed.

It drowns out the sound of the conversation in the hallway, and she's glad of it.

Just like Han.

She'd heard that. Who was that? The voice sounded so familiar, but still so — She can't put her finger on it. She tries to shut out the distractions, the ambient noise, Ben's low timber that she finds herself liking just a little too well. It's a comfort.

That's because he'd comforted you, stupid, she thinks to herself. The hyperdrive sounds clear after a few seconds, so she stops it, and she hears —

'She has the same darkness.'

Rey prickles and whips her head around to look behind her. Ben is telling someone about her? Suddenly she feels the need to hug herself protectively. It wasn't fair that he could pass it around as he saw fit. It wasn't fair at all. She'd kept his secret for Han, and now — Who was he talking to? His mother? His …

Uncle? Just like Han. Was that Luke Skywalker's voice she'd heard? Her heart pounds in her chest.

No. None of her business. He'd have invited her to the conversation if he wanted her to be any part of it. Some other part of her insists that he should have thought of that before talking about her right outside the engineering bay she was working in.

She feels distant from him for the first time since they've met, recognizes how insignificant she is to him, how much of a life he has outside of here. And in swells the cold, the shadow. The darkness he speaks of. It comes in a whisper, barely even audible to her, so far off.

'They're going to convince him to leave you.' It doesn't matter who 'they' are. Han, Chewie, if that really is his Uncle he's talking to. The voice is certain. 'It won't be hard. You're nothing to them.' ]

[ He opens his mouth to expand, to say something-- but that's the thing about this bond.

He feels it too-- ]

You can't feel that?

[ 'Ben, what are you talking about?'

It's as if the light outside doesn't exist. It's inky and dark and usually... his thoughts darken as well. But it doesn't come this time-- ]

Rey!

[ Luke shouts after him and at this point he can't hear it. It's not important. She is. There is Definitely sock sliding down the halls this time. Mixed with a side of slamming into a wall because he's in tight quarters and worried and someone is using them both. He's sure of this now. Someone who rivaled Luke Skywalker in strength.

That clarity brings with it strength. Strength Ben Solo never thought himself possible of. But when he carts his ass to the engineering bay-- he sees it for the first time.

Their darkness.

A specter floating above her and whispering into her ear. ]

Rey--!

[ Don't do something dramatic and dumb like--

I forgot I was talking about one of the Skywalkers. He's gonna do something dramatic and dumb like wrap his arms around her. At least he's not pulling out his lightsaber. ]

[ Relief floods her as two arms close around her from behind, and Rey leans away from the hyperdrive and reaches up to hold him there, eyes shut. Every inch of her covered still by her scavenging gear, she is able to hide the pain in her expression. It's a pain that comes from fear and guilt — that she should be so attached to this though it's so brief, that he would need to forget what he was doing and cradle her.

She turns and throws herself into his arms, pulling him against her. It's just them now; no Luke, no darkness. One hand lets go of him to pull her mask away — goggles first, then nose and mouth cover, and she does it so she can burrow her face against his neck.

No visions this time. Just their breathing, amplified, funneled and twisted through the Force. Like this moment between the two of them is hyperreal, defined by their contact. It's an addictive thing. She had gone so long without anyone, so long without touch. He was the first one in — in years. She aches for it now, sorry for his gloves, glad for the strip of skin at his neck, poking above his collar.

She's greedy. Greedy and starved. And though his presence, his light, chases the darkness away for the moment, its roots are chased deeper into her, curling and hooking in.

She has something to lose now. ]

It's alright. [ She runs her hand over his back, as though she needs to reassure him. ] I'm okay. Really. I — [ Why is he holding her? Hadn't he — Isn't he afraid of that darkness too? Isn't that why he's telling someone about her? Figuring out what should be done with her? Shuddering, wide-eyed and fearful, she pulls back to look up at him. She doesn't know how to put it to words, not quite, but she wrestles and — ] Did I do something wrong?

[ She hadn't seen it-- nor sensed it. And of course it makes sense. Things start to pile up and together and-- All this time. All this pain and discontent and uncertainty that had plagued him. It wasn't him?

The thought should give him freedom, but it doesn't. It makes him question everything, himself, his family-- why hadn't anyone known? Or investigated? What had Luke been doing all that time? His mother hadn't sensed anything wrong? And-- these are all questions for another time. He can't get lost in them.

He pulls her closer because for now that seems to tuck her away from whatever was haunting them. She's so slight in his arms and-- he realizes she's a hardy thing. He'd seen the way she'd bashed Plutt's head in and knew her way around these wrecks, but in this moment she feels fragile.

He pulls back to get a better look at her and-- Oh. Oh here was the shit we were talking about????
