I know everyone and their mom with an armchair psychologist degree wants to diagnose Kylo Ren/Ben Solo with whatever mental illness checks all the boxes. I know Bipolar and Borderline personality disorder are two popular illnesses to cite when it comes to his mental health. Along with a healthy dose of citing him as a sociopath/psychopath. However, I'm not going to be using those illnesses/personality disorders in how I play Kylo. While they fit on paper, I don't believe "what's wrong with him" presents in the correct fashion in canon for any one of the above listed issues.

I believe Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is suffering from: Recurring Chronic Major Depression it could be passed down through their family given what we know of Anakin and what happened with Luke; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder From his force powers manifesting with him having little control over it as a kid, from being sent away to Luke after his mother couldn't handle him on her own anymore, from his father leaving one day and never coming back, from having a voice whispering in his head his entire life, from that voice being a predator who preyed on his weaknesses and molded him into what he wanted Ben to be, from Luke Skywalker holding a lightsaber above his head, from abuse after abuse from Snoke, and probably a Ton more. Abandonment issues stemming first from his parents (And quite probably friends he had who left for whatever reason, or bridges he burned on his own) and then just. The entire force tbh. And abandonment issues is where he gets his unchecked rage, he, in canon, is quite literally triggered into a rage whenever he confronts someone who he felt abandoned him, or when he feels rejected or left behind. Finally he is a victim of Brainwashing and indoctrination from Snoke. Snoke is a narcissist who was using Kylo as a means to an end, it's been stated and shown that he was ready to kill Kylo after the Last Jedi since he had become unbalanced and unpredictable. If you don't agree with what I am saying here (Which is fine :) ), then I suggest you don't play with me. I am fairly confident in this being the way I see and play Kylo.

I play him as having triggers. I won't get into the reasoning behind each one, but i'll specify the specifics which come to mind: Abandonment (Perceived or real), his family, loss of control (Physically, emotionally, mentally, through the force)

[ Ben takes the bottle, eyeing it suspiciously-- He's fairly sure if they leave it near fire it will leave a small crater from the force of the explosion, but sets it down on the table. His eyes scan his father just giving him a "Really" type look.

Though he really has to wonder if his parents are also concerned with his distinct lack of a dating life.

There'd been that one girl at Luke's temple... She was soft and objectively attractive. Not that much younger than him. One night they'd stayed up to watch the stars, she'd been touching him all night, but then her hand was on his thigh and it was like. Flares just being sent up in his synapses.

Just as she'd started to lean in Luke had interrupted the both of them and he'd hopped back across the room.

Of course he hadn't told his parents about that or her. The humiliation alone was something he took no pride in and... honestly he's not sure how much she was attracted to her and how much he was just Going with it.

Also they'd want to meet her and make a Thing out of it.

A sigh through his nose and Chewbacca comes ambling over with a blanket handing it off to Rey. It's not thick and won't do much good, but it's the gesture that counts more than anything.

[ It's nearly a grunt as his father and the wookiee wander back to the crews quarters. There's still tension in his shoulders as he looks to Rey. ]

[ He's not about to just-- jump back into embracing her like he was before. He's not sure what kind of support she needs right now. ]

[ Rey takes the blanket from Chewbacca with some severe uncertainty. It's clear she doesn't know what to do with it. She's never had a blanket. She's never needed a blanket. She's never been given something that is supposed to make her life easier, and now Chewie has given her both food and a blanket.

He's her mother. She's a baby duck and now he's her mother. She gives him a little hug before he leaves the room, burying her face in his fur. Chewbacca makes a garbled sound of reassurance and then slips off with Han, leaving Ben and Rey alone.

She looks over at him and just … nods. Sheepishly. ]

You don't want him to know about this. [ She struggles to get that out in a whisper. ] About me. Why?

[ His expression pinches slightly as he makes his move to slump back on to the couch. He's not sure where to begin with that question, the various ways in which his family had hang ups and somehow it was more acceptable to be seen as pursuing a fourteen year old child than being curious about her Force potential. He looks down to the hand where they'd touched earlier, he's still wearing those gloves and he contemplates what exactly to say to her. ]

My family is afraid of me. [ That much he knew. ] I've been told my entire life how strong I could become, but as I got older-- they started to see me as a monster.

[ His father bailed early and even if he's back now, Ben could tell. Every time he worked on his saber, every time he practiced, or used the Force to even do something mundane. He just got this Look. That's all Ben needed to see.

He drops his hand and looks over to her. ]

That darkness, the thing you saw in your dreams-- what you're feeling. I've felt it for almost my entire life-- [ he presses his mouth together. wetting his lips. ] -- I thought it was just me. But I think something's targeting us.

[ All of this.. only sort of answers her question, so he'll be a bit more specific now. ]

My father especially is scared of that darkness, he doesn't really-- care for the Force or Jedi-- [ with half a laugh ] or the Sith. Any of it. I don't want him looking at you like that.

[ That same frightened, confused look he'd gotten time and time again. The one which told him all he needed to know. ]

[ Taking this in, Rey's expression darkens. Some part of her had simplified his life. Famous dad. Famous uncle. Probably famous mom too. Wasn't Leia Organa the only sibling to Luke Skywalker she'd heard of? They were all part of the Rebellion together, according to the stories. It sounded like a cushy life — everything she had ever wanted. Parents, a home, a purpose. Something that made sense.

Except that it didn't. What he felt, obviously, did not mesh with what that place for him was. Maybe that was harder than having no place at all. She didn't have any mould to break.

Rey goes to sit on the other side of the bench, careful not to invade his personal space as she looks down at him, sorrowful and … understanding. She can feel the complicated emotions that stir in regard to his father, in regard to that darkness.

She takes a few silent moments to process it before she answers him. ]

You're campaigning really hard to make me regret ever running into you, you know.

[ It's certainly made her life more complicated. She's something Han Solo would loathe, apparently, and she's being targeted by some shadowy figure of darkness that has apparently been haunting Ben his whole life. Not a considerable net gain, thus far, especially with the visions factored in. But … ]

[ Alright, that's a Frightening thing to just tell a person you're on a ship with. On the other hand, she doesn't plan to jump to hyperspace with him — ever — so it's a little bit of a non-issue. But still. If anything, it makes her more frightened and nervous of herself. If he could do it, she could too, right? He'd said she was like him, and … Well, yikes. That makes her less sure she's not going to wind up in a ship at hyperspeed with him.

Rey doesn't want to address that either though. She doesn't want to feel like enough of a monster to need to be handled and she doesn't want to admit that she might have to leave Jakku after all, if that's true. Unfortunately, everything he says demands it. She frowns. ]

[ Other things that are amazing to consider: Ben Solo's abandonment issues aren't Nearly as acute when his family Actually Did come for him at his weakest point!!!!!!!!! For all the bitching he does about Han, deep deep down this is probably the happiest he's been in years.

All that is to say, that is the reason he doesn't immediately get Shouty and Angry and Fascist Dictatory. There is a pang of hurt, but-- he understands in his own way her reasoning. Why she wants to stay. To wait for her family. The need to belong somewhere-- to someone.

But he can't ignore the fact he's seen her past. ]

[ An earnest question, because even if they'd accidentally kept picking up on each other's thoughts-- she'd never spelled it out clearly to any of them. ]

[ For a moment, Rey seems to weigh whether or not Ben deserves her level four tragic backstory yet. Ultimately she decides that he does, and with a sigh, looks down into her hands in her lap. My family. [ She picks at the dirt under her nails. ] They're coming back for me. If I don't wait here for them, they'll never find me.

[ And they will be back. She has to believe that. If she doesn't, if she lets it go, then— Something trembles in her chest as she inhales and ultimately fixes him with a breezy smile. This, she feels sure about. It's the right choice. If she was having trouble, like Ben seems to be, when her family came back, then they'd help her get to Skywalker. They would support her. They'd stick around. They wouldn't be like Han and his nervous looks and his don't-wanna-know attitude. ]

[ She bristles when he settles the blanket over her, as though she expects an attack, and she turns slightly to look at him, catching his eye just as he turns away. No. Not an attack. Just … He cares. For whatever reason, he gives a shit, and Rey can hardly grasp that. No one on Jakku gives a shit about anybody — barely even themselves. They're all so dead inside; they've given up.

She looks away from him again. His calm radiates outward, so though she doesn't consciously tap into it, she can feel tension leaving her body as he just … rubs off on her. Non-sexually.

It's the best night of sleep she's ever gotten. No nightmares of her parents, no tossing and turning, no restless anxiety as she waits for someone to come at her with a knife. She feels safe here, on the Falcon. It's the only time in her life she remembers feeling safe.

In the morning, she picks herself up with practiced speed. There's not much for her to collect. She pulls her hair back again, secures it back into its usual style, and pulls her boots back on. She folds the blanket up. She's awake before everyone else on the ship, and quiet in what she does. She's never really had any ambient sound, so she's sensitive to her own rustling. ]

[ Jumpy indeed. She flinches a little when he speaks, surprised by the fact that he's awake, albeit not very alert. Mostly she's just not used to other people being around in general. It wasn't that she had forgotten his presence, exactly, but rather that she had side-stepped it. Now he's a living, breathing person again and she's not used to being in other people's company.
